"The Visual Disease" that is Helvetica

Let me start off by saying I will be typing in Helvetica today. Last Thursday in class we watched the film Helvetica, after watching a film like that you really start to notice your surroundings. The definition of design is a plan or drawing produced to show the look and function or workings of a building, garment or other object before it is built or made. Being in the communications field design has a bigger effect on us as I am sure it does for people such as people who study fashion. Massimo Vignelli refers to advertising and such as a " Visual Disease" that can be cured with design. Design reconstructs an image by making it clear, straightforward and creating some sort of order. Type is a weapon, it is a weapon because it creates reactions from its audience.

Helvetica comes from the Latin name The Swiss Type. Swiss people are not usually considered to form a single ethnic group and the swiss type is not used for only one circumstance. Helvetica is a neutral font but when used in different instances it can make a different statement just like different ethnic groups make different statements. In the film Jonathan Hoefler said "And Helvetica maybe says everything, and that's perhaps part of its appeal." And of course Vignelli said it best when referring to Helvetica, "You can say, "I love you," in Helvetica. And you can say it with Helvetica Extra Light if you want to be really fancy. Or you can say it with the Extra Bold if it's really intensive and passionate, you know, and it might work." So if you haven't come to see yet this movie has definitely opened my mind up to some dominating thoughts on Helvetica and has also got me hooked on some very interesting and talented people.
